Job Description:         Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Coordinator

 

Purpose of a SANE: The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to sexual assault victims. The SANE exam may include a medical-forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, and referrals to appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings.

 

Definition: The SANE Coordinator meets all SANE qualifications to participate in on-call rotation. Additionally, the coordinator will interact with multidisciplinary persons/departments to ensure that the program functions smoothly.

 

Qualifications:           

 

  • Current Registered Nurse license in good standing
  • BLS certified
  • An experienced Registered Nurse who has undergone Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training. SANE-A and SANE-P training or can complete required trainings and didactic course work within a reasonable amount of time.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred. Previous supervisory experience, teaching, or leadership experience helpful
  • Demonstrates ability to interact with multidisciplinary teams, communicate program needs, and work with peers to establish smooth functioning.
  • Minimum three years nursing experience; specialty experience in pediatric health, women’s health, emergency department or intensive care (preferred), public health or psychiatry recommended with demonstrated autonomy and professional judgement in nursing practice.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Ability to perform emergent medical triage of the presenting patients, to include pediatric, adolescent and adult patients.
  • Perform and document sexual assault medical forensic interviews/exams acutely and timely
  • Perform a complete medical forensic evaluation to include:
  • Establishing and maintaining a reporting structure to Nursing and Medical Directors. Shares all information as needed to ensure program functions.
  • Acting as a resource in current state legislation and maintains knowledge to ensure program functioning.
  • Preparing and providing orientation and performs evaluation of personnel in the SANE program.
  • Establishing annual competency and quality assurance goals.
  • Scheduling meetings to provide timely updates and disseminate necessary information to ensure program functions.
  • Preparing a monthly on call schedule. Communicates schedule needs to provide 24/7 coverage.
  • Maintaining supplies and equipment as needed to conduct forensic examinations.
  • Providing data as indicated to the SANE/SART Coordinator to assure accurate record management and quality assurance process.
  • Testifying as fact witness to any/all cases performed as a SANE. Train other personnel for courtroom proceedings.
  • Overseeing and completing all paperwork required to compile statistics for funding resources.
  • Assisting and sharing knowledge of program functions to hospital providers.
  • Establishing good relationship with community resource personnel: providing feedback as needed to law enforcement.
